Trevor "The Tornado" Montgomery scored his second NSRA win of the season Saturday night on Tri-Cities Raceway's ½ mile high banked tri-oval. Montgomery started the 35-lap event at the rear of the 16-car field after missing his heat race when his Lemonty Racing team was forced to change motors after a terminal problem in the dash. This was the third consecutive week the team has performed the operation and they now have down to a 45 minute drill. Last week's winner Rick Brown finished second well back of the flying Montgomery with Craig Deaver, Mike Basher and Todd Coleman rounding out the top five.
Eric Garrett, making his first NSRA appearance of the year, led the first two laps with Shawn Rice taking over on lap 3. Rice, in his third asphalt event, build a solid lead in the early portion of the race as Brown, Mike Newman and Deaver worked through traffic from their 4th and 5th row starting spots. Montgomery was also on the move and had worked into the top eight when Newman made contact with another car and hit the wall hard on lap 12. The yellow turned red as the Styrofoam and tire barrier did its job by dissipating the force but spreading debris all over the track.
Rice held the lead on the start but Montgomery was relentless as he picked off one car per lap finally getting by the leader on lap 20. Rice's night ended early when he pitted with overheating problems three laps later. Once in front, Montgomery pulled away over the last portion of the event with Brown and Deaver taking the second and third spots as the event moved to its conclusion. Randy DuBois, Brian Smith, Mike Sullivan, Jr., Harold Anderson and Garrett filled the top ten following Basher and Coleman.
In preliminary action, Montgomery had fast time at 14.618; Garrett won the Design 500 B Dash over Coleman and Brown bested Newman in the A Dash. Newman took the first heat over Rice and DuBois; Deaver won the second heat with Gene Jones and Basher following and Coleman bested Brown and Brett Marquart in heat three.
