The final night of the Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup got underway under nearly cloudless skies. The stands were full and the crowd was primed for racing action. Speculation was rampant, who would win the trophy tonight? Would it be Ladies Night at the Race with Shawna Wilskey, who beat out Brent Kaeding on Thursday night take the money? Would it be Peter Murphy, from the Land Down Under, the holder of the new track record? Maybe Jayme Barnes, in the Huson Bros. 3D would walk away with it all. It could be one of the former winners or someone completely new to take the championship.Jayme Barnes of Everett, WA driving the #3 Huson Bros. The early crowd on the Thursday night race had the opportunity to witness not only a new track record but also a record number of drivers timing in at 11+ seconds. Peter Murphy broke Chad Hillier’s record with a time in of 11.169. The track tonight was a fast one with 27 sprint cars with times in the 11s. Fifty-one sprint cars participated in the first night of the Jim Raper Memorial Super Dirt Cup. This first night of Super Dirt Cup treated the crowd to some tremendous racing on a beautifully prepared track. The A-Main had a "Holy Smokes!" crowd on their feet finish. The line-up at the start of the C-main had Jay Barnes on the pole with Jeff Hodgson in the first row, Travis Jacobson and Jim Skinner in the second row and Rod Perkins and Rick Smith in the third row. Out of the shoot in the first lap was the V8 of Jeff Hodgson followed by Jay Barnes #9 and Travis Jacobson #59. In lap two Jacobson took a hard flip in turn four putting him out until the Friday night race. By lap four the V8 was still out front with the race for second between challengers Jay Barnes and Jim Skinner. By lap ten Jay was closing in on Jeff Hodgson with the 73 of Jim Skinner still in third place. Jay lost his challenge in lap twelve when he hit the turn four wall. The restart after the red had the V8 followed by 73 with a wide open track ahead of them. Rick Smith # 28 and Rod Perkins 69P were close behind. The checkered was taken by Jeff Hodgson in his V8 and the 73 of Jeff Skinner to move up. Butch Gilbert’s 604 came in third as the alternate.
The B-Main had Barry Martinez and Kirk Fellers in the first row, Tony Lutar and Jay R Harkness in the second row, then Mike Melwicks and Jimmy Carter, followed by Mike Faria and Chris Schmelze. Kirk Fellers took the early lead with Martinez close behind. By lap two Fellers had a good lead over Martinez, with Carter, Lutar and Faria engaging the battle. Carter took over Martinez in lap five with Fellers still in the lead. Lap traffic had Fellers, Carter and Lutar. Lap nine had Carter all over Fellers, then Faria got around Lutar then around Carter and Fellers. Jay R Harkness spun out in turn two of lap eleven. The line up at the restart was Faria, Carter, Skinner (a lapped car). As they took off Faria spread out the lead in turn two. Faria was moving into lapped traffic in lap 16. Martinez brought out a yellow and went to the in-field. Restart of lap 16 was Faria, Carter, Lutar. Martinez came out to rejoin the pack at the back. Jay Barnes went dead in the water, pulling into the infield. Barnes, Harkness and Carter left the race at this point. Faria, Lutar, Fellers and Burrow had the lead at the lap 17 restart. Faria took off, his foot in it pressed by Lutar. What a take off for an exciting finish to the B-Main, with Mike Faria first and Tony Lutar second both to transfer to the A-Main and Bobby Burrow third for alternate.
Randy Ridge had with pole position next to Tom Waggoner at the start of the A-Main. They were followed by Alan Munn and Shawna Wilskey, Chad Hillier and Johnny Rodriguez. As they took off down the front shoot Ridge took off ahead of Waggoner. Wilskey quickly overtook Waggoner. Johnny Rodriguez passed Waggoner and in lap six Kaeding got around Waggoner. A clean, fast race so far, bringing Ridge then Wilskey and Kaeding into lapped traffic. Tim Kaeding brought out a yellow in the tenth lap between turns one and two. The restart had Ridge, Wilskey, Rodriguez, Kaeding and Waggoner charging into battle, racing quickly into lapped traffic. They were pretty well spread out with an even pace when Shawna Wilskey flew around Ridge. Randy got a little out of shape on lap 15 allowing Rodriguez to get around him. On lap 16 we had Shawna, Rodriguez, Kaeding and Ridge, the leads changing rapidly. Lap 20 had Kaeding all over Rodriguez, going high to get around him then racing to chase down Wilskey. A tough battle in lap 24, Brent made contact with Wilskey on lap 24 an amazing battle, a drag race to the finish with Shawna Wilskey the "first lady of dirt" taking the checkered in the A-Main. Shawna Wilskey, car owned by Scotty Pierce is a three time NST champion. What a finish!
Who knows who will win the battle in the Friday night race? With so many great competitors, an incredible number of fast times, a great field of out of town drivers here to challenge our favorite locals the show tomorrow will be worth seeing.
