Wenatchee Valley Super Oval, East Wenatchee Wa
September 24th 2000

by Kelly Hart Coming off his huge season ending win at Yakima the previous night to capture the Raybestos Brakes Northwest Series championship, WVSO track owner Garrett Evans (Ardenvoir) had one more chance to win at is own track. The Wenatchee 200 presented by Pepsi Cola presented the biggest challenge yet of Evans career. He had yet to win since renovating the track two years ago. He has been competitive and led races only to be bitten by the mechanical bug at his own track.

Facing a field of 38 qualifiers, 23 in the 12 second bracket, Evans qualified fast at 12.475 earning a share of the track record in qualifying. Three trophy dashes were won by the trio of Todd Whitham (Spokane) in the C dash, Kelly Mann (Monroe) the B dash and Shane Mitchell (Wenatchee) the A dash.

The fifty lap B Main event was led wire to wire by Joe Constance (Everett). Also transferring to the A main were second through fourth place finishers Jerry Fink (Woodinville), Brad Tanner (Portland, OR) and John Zaretzke (Yakima). Zaretzke had engine troubles and Devin Eireman took the other move up spot as the fifth place finisher.

Garrett Evans #64 Winning The Wenatchee 200 Sunday Sept 24th with Ron Eaton #77 finishing 2nd charging from 13th starting position at Wenatchee Valley Super Oval

In the 200 lap feature, Winston West competitor Kevin Richards (Spokane) led the first 29 laps getting into heavy traffic on the 15th circuit. Richards tangled with lapped traffic and that put him into the turn three wall. Damaging the car beyond repair and he was done for the afternoon. Evans had been running in the backup position after starting sixth and inherited the lead. He led from there until the 100 lap intermission.

Line Up after 100 Lap intermission-#64 Evans, #99, #80, #11, #86, #84, #47,
With most of the top teams taking four new tires and making minor chassis adjustments during the intermission, the $20,000.00 bonus qualifiers had been narrowed from six to four. Big Ten Series Super Late Model champion Jeff Bailey (Pasco) was also taken out in the lap 29 incident and done for the day. Before the race would restart, Kim Wennerberg (Wenatchee) had electrical problems and was also done for the day.

Sheri Howard after winning the Winged Modified Feature Sunday at Wenatchee Valley Super Oval

Evans started fast at the 101 lap mark with Tom Sweatman (Cosmopolis) and Shane Mitchell (Wenatchee) close behind and hungry for the 20k bonus. On the 113th lap Sweatman entered turn one high and exited low getting around Evans for the lead. Determined to get the elad back, Evans dogged Sweatman until the 121st lap and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way. For Evans the victory closed out his two race weekend with two wins and two big paydays.

The companion Winged Modified race saw champion Sherri Howard (Mead) set fast time 11.773. Donnie Kudrna (Othello) won the trophy dash. Howard passed Chad Halladay on the 4th lap and never looked back winning the 30 lap feature and $1,000.00.
