A Well Tuned Jefferson Takes Late Model Victory at Yakima Speedway
(Yakima, WA) August 3rd 2002- Saturday night at Yakima Speedway,
Jason Jefferson regained top form after having engine trouble in
his last Yakima race. Jefferson's new Dodge power plant ran
perfect all night as he set a fast time of 18.834 and won the
Fast Dash trophy. Starting 6th in the main, Jefferson passed B.J.
Tidrick for the lead on lap 13. The only car able to keep pace
with Jefferson was Brandon Riehl of Boring Oregon. But Riehl,
spun his car out on lap 10 and had to restart at the back of the
21 car field. Showing patience, Riehl worked his way back up to
the front and passed Tidrick for 2nd by lap 50. But Riehl, could
not mount a challenge for Jefferson after he restarted so far
back in the field and had to settle for 2nd. Rookie sensation
B.J. Tidrick, who won the last Yakima race on July, 13th,
expected his car to be better than it was and was disappointed
that he could not contend for the win. The runner up to current
point leader and the defending Late Model points champion
Jefferson, fell to 22 points back with a ill handling car. He was
happy to take home 3rd and stay in contention for the Late Model
points title.
The Cope twins finished respectively as Angela came in 10th and
Amber 14th. Angela earlier had won the B Dash after engine
trouble had plagued her all day.
The Super Stock class saw Bob Dexter set the pace as he had fast
time with a 21.213, and then win the fast heat. Dexter started
6th in the Main and passed John Rose for the lead on lap 17.
Dexter never looked back as he finished the 35 lap event with a
1/2 straightway lead over Rose, who ended up 2nd. 16 year old
rookie Darrell Tidrick, held on to a 4 point lead over Rose by
finishing 3rd.
The Hobby Stock point leader, Don Klang, led Jason Trujillo and
Ralph Smith to the checkered flag to extend his points lead to 72
over Don Sowder, who ended up in 5th.
The Factory Stock field was the largest it's seen this season.
Jake Maggart out classed the 12 car field as he set a fast time
of 24.763 and then padded his points lead by winning the main
event. Steve Kastl finished 2nd and Dusty John ran 3rd.
Yakima Speedway will take next weekend off and then return on
August, 17th with a full show of Super Stocks, Street Stocks,
Hobby Stocks, and Factory Stocks. The Late Models will return to
Yakima on August 24th.
