                             Boyd wins Bud I-5 openers at Medford and Lebanon.

  After scoring an impressive win in the Firecracker 100 at Medford on Friday
night 4-time Willamette Speedway champ Bob Boyd held off 2-time Bud I-5 champ
Darren Coffell to win the 40 lap feature in round two of the Bud I-5
Challenge Tour on Saturday night in Lebanon. A near capacity crowd turned out again on
Saturday night as the Willamette Speedway fans got their first look at the
2003 Bud I-5 title contenders following a rained-out opener on June 21st. A hard
charging Trevor Glaser held off  B-Main transfer Rob Mayea who finished ahead
of Tom Halter whose 5th place finish gave the Bend, Oregon trio of Coffell,
Mayea and Halter three of the top 5 spots. Jerry Schram of Vancouver,
Washington finished sixth over 2001 Bud I-5 champ Russ Sell in 7th and fast timer Tim
Zeller who finished 8th after a strong 2nd place finish in Medford on Friday
night. Last week's feature winner David Hawkes and Tim Goodwin rounded out the
top ten.
  Boyd, who decided to concentrate on the Bud I-5 Tour title in 2003 instead
of going for a modern day record 5th Willamette title, had a $2,000 win at
Medford on Friday night after adding $200 to his $1800 1st place prize by picking
up the bonus money offered to any of the six fastest Medford race qualifiers
in time trials who won the main event.
  55 cars turned out for the Medford race and 52 entered the Saturday show at
Lebanon.                                                                     
                                                                        
 The remainder of the 2003 Bud I-5 Tour will see another appearance of the
touring group on August 16th  in Lebanon before the Bud I-5 events at Elma,
Washington on September 20th and the two-night season closing races at Medford on
September 26th and 27th.
