Jayme Barnes Takes Race Three In U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co.
Northern Sprint Tour “Northwest Speedweek” Wednesday July 16th at Willamette
Speedway in Lebanon, Oregon
Wednesday, July 16, 2003 (Willamette Speedway – Lebanon, OR)-
With Jayme Barnes taking race number three of the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co.
Northern Sprint Tour’s “Northwest Speedweek”, the domination of the weeklong
series of races by Californian drivers may be coming to an end. The Everett,
WA based driver took control of the field at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon,
OR on Wednesday evening and held control for the full 30 laps of the feature
event. With Campbell, CA veteran Brent Kaeding seldom close enough to
challenge.
“I really got a good start but it was a bit scary a couple of times in
traffic. Once I settled in, the only thing that I felt could beat me was my
own driving,” stated Barnes post race.
When asked if he had thought about his win breaking the Californian
dominance at Willamette Speedway as well as the series Barnes replied, “No,
I never did think about that. I was just concentrating on getting a win”.
Barnes jumped to lead at the start over pole sitter Steve Kent of Fresno,
CA and Kent slid hi in turn three allowing Kaeding to move to second as the
finished the opening lap. By the 5th lap Barnes’ #9 car was into slower
traffic with Kaeding and Kent closing the gap and Jason Solwold of Sedro
Woolley, WA not far behind. Working through the traffic, Barnes moved to the
high side and lost some more ground but saved himself with a tight inside
move through turns one and two that put Geoff Beck between himself and
Kaeding on lap 10. On the next lap the first of two yellow flags flew when
Shawna Wilskey ended up against the turn one wall, out with reported
front-end problems.
When action resumed, both Kaeding and Kent were able to get past lapped cars
but Barnes already had opened 15 – 20 car length lead. On lap 14 a multi-car
turn one tangle saw Boise, ID’s Joe Ramaker and Richard Brace, Jr. of
Auburn, CA flip, with Brace going over the wall and out of the park. Andy
Forsberg, also from Auburn, hit the turn wall head on to retire his car for
the night. Sedro Woolley, WA driver Chad Hillier was also in the melee but
continued the race with little or no damage.
As racing continued several cars moved toward the front, with Marvin Smith
of Cottage Grove, OR doing the best job by picking off 11 positions between
the green and the checkered. Lynnwood, WA’s Barry Martinez moved up eight
positions and Jay Cole of Shelton gained seven spots.
Monday and Tuesday night’s winner Roger Crockett, of Eugene, OR raced with
Jeff Hodgson from St Albert, AB and Steven Allard of Chico, CA for several
laps for 5th place. Allard dropped out of the top 10 as Crockett finished
5th ahead of Hodgson.
Barnes was back in traffic by the 18th lap, but was tending to hold the low
line and moved well in traffic, keeping a lapped car between himself and
Kaeding most of the time. With five to go, Solwold passed Kent for third as
Kaeding continued to slowly close the gap on the leader.
At the finish line on the final lap Kaeding was still a couple of car
lengths short and a jubilant Barnes took the win.
“If there had been more time in traffic I think I could have got him,” said
Kaeding. “We’ve been struggling this year at some tracks and I would have
liked to win. Jamey did a great job, with few mistakes and it really is
great to see this team win. The track was awesome and we’ve had a lot of
fun. Maybe we can do the whole week next year.”
“We have had a good weekend”, said third place finisher Solwold, and we were
getting close to Brent at the end but we needed more traffic because we were
all running close to the same speed. So, it’s on to Elma and try again”.
Hodgson took home the B-Main over Jimmy Carter of Cloverdale, BC, leading
all 15 laps. A great race for third between Shawn Smith of Nampa, ID,
Minden, NV driver Wayne Williams and Forsberg ended when Smith spun on lap
seven, giving third place to Williams and fourth to Forsberg. Chris
Schmelzle of Victoria, BC brought out the next to yellows, once for a spin
on lap 7 and then again on lap 11 when his mount died on the back straight
on lap 11.
Gold Hill, OR’s T.J. Winningham was the C-Main leader until he spun on lap 3
in the first turn, turning the front spot over to rookie Randy Pierce of
Nampa, ID. Winningham charged back to second place with Steve Veltman
getting the final transfer to the B-Main.
Heat one had Jay Cole lead wire to wire with Solwold up to 3rd place on the
opening lap. Solwold grabbed took 2nd on the next go around, but Cole was
gone for the win. Wilskey and Hillier followed to A-Main transfers, also.
In the second heat, Central Point, OR hot shoe Billy Nutter held the lead
until turn 2 on the last lap when he and Kent made contact and Nutter spun,
ending in 7th place. Geoff Beck was third with Joe Ramaker fourth.
Heat three went to Crockett who took lead on the last lap when he went high
around slow car to beat Marvin Smith to the line. A nasty looking double
flip out of turn four while going to the checkered flag had Brad Sweet and
Jimmy Carter shedding parts everywhere. Carter was able to run later, but
Sweet was done for the night.
The final heat went to Martinez going green to checkered with Trulli, Barnes
and Allard following.
In the dash it was Kent leading the way over Barnes and Kaeding. Solwold
followed Crockett until moving to 4th on last corner with Allard filling the
last spot.
Fast time for the night went to Hodgson, His second of the week with an
11.279 sec lap. A toyal of 38 cars qualified.
Drivers and fans now take a day off to prepare for the “Evergreen State
Sprint Challenge” at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA on Friday and
Saturday, July 18th & 19th with the winner picking up $5000.

Crockett Makes It Two In A Row At U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co.
Northern Sprint Tour “Northwest Speedweek”
By Geoge Hespe
July 15, 2003 Cottage Grove Speedway - Cottage Grove, OR
Except for three times, in previous U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern
Sprint Tour “Northwest Speedweek” races there was a visiting driver from
California standing in the winners circle collecting accolades and cash. As
current points leader Roger Crockett proved at Cottage Grove Speedway on
Tuesday evening, that’s not going to be happening every race this year.
Making the Cottage Grove, OR track his second conquest in a row, Crockett
may be setting his sights on matching Brad Furr’s 1999 feat of winning all
five Northwest Speedweek races. “It feels great to win over past multiple
winners like Kent (Steve) and Kaeding (Brent), but we run every race to win,
just like they do, and it’s paying off,” was Crockett’s comment when asked
his feelings on the win. “Taking all five would be great of course, but we
will concentrate on winning each race as we run it,” stated the Eugene, OR
based driver.
On a track that was already going dry slick before the feature event,
passing was not as easy as usual and finesse and smoothness worked better
than horsepower to make advances.
Dash winner Jayme Barnes of Everett, WA took the lead from the pole after a
yellow on the opening lap, and action was slowed twice again in the first 6
laps. One mishap sending Placerville, CA’s Jimmy Trulli, Dale Smith of
Cottage Grove and Shawn Smith of Nampa, ID to the pits and the final one
putting Central Point, OR’s Billy Nutter out.
Barnes retained his lead on the restarts with Crockett putting the pressure
on until he was able to make the pass for the lead on lap 14. “I made a
couple of mistakes early on that cost me, one when Roger got by,” said
Barnes in a post race comment, “but the last of the race ran good and I felt
I could hold the position.
With Crockett out front the field opened up with a few individual battles as
the leaders worked through traffic. Shawna Wilskey of Mt. Vernon, WA and
Andy Forsberg out of Auburn, CA fought for fifth place with both drivers
holding the position behind Campbell, CA veteran Brent Kaeding, and Sydney,
AU driver Peter Murphy won a race long battle with Chad Hillier of Sedro
Woolley, WA for 8th.
A big disappointment for Monday night’s 3rd place finisher Jason Solwold,
when pulled to the infield while running a solid fourth and challenging Kent
after losing the gears in the rear end on lap eighteen.
With the laps passing quickly it was soon checkered flag time with Crockett
making it two in a row and looking for number three.
In the post race trackside interview by announce Fred Rannard, Jr., third
place finisher Steve Kent commented, “With the track taking rubber and all
the cars so close in speed, it was really hard to pass. You just about have
to wait for a mistake on the part of the car in front of you.” “Also,” said
Kent, “these drivers have really stepped up to the challenge and are getting
better every year. They have better equipment and more experience, and it’s
getting harder to win every year.”
The B-Main got off to a slow start with two yellow flags flying before the
third time was the charm and racing got under way. Kaeding took the initial
lead, but Hillier made good from the outside on the next two tries and held
for 4 laps before relinquishing the top spot to Kaeding for good.
Hillier did challenge a couple of times when the leaders were fighting
slower cars, but Kaeding made the best of the high groove to keep the lead.
Trulli ran in 3rd the full 15 laps, keeping both St. Albert, AB driver Jeff
Hodgson and Wayne Williams of Minden, NV at bay.
Although a yellow on the last lap closed the field, a clear track gave
Kaeding an open run to the win with Nutter making a hard charge into the
final transfer spot behind Hillier and Trulli.
The C-Main got off to a bumpy start for Vern Scevers and Barry Martinez when
they did a double flip in turn one on the opening lap and damage to the cars
ended the night for both drivers.
Once action resumed, Canadian driver Tyler Pincemin of Morinville, AB took
the point and never looked back to the checkered flag. T. J. Winningham of
Gold Hill, OR made a couple of good tries for the lead as traffic slowed
Pincemin, but had no success. Winningham lost his transfer to the B Main on
the last lap when he and Pincemin closed on a slow car in turn four on the
final lap. Winningham went high, while fellow Morinville driver and teammate
Geoff Beck took the low groove with Beck beating Winningham to the line.
The evening’s racing action got off to a bang-up start, when Kaeding and
Hodges did a synchronous double roll in turn two on the second lap while
fighting for 5th place. Kaeding returned with a new wing but Hodges was out
for the heat.
Forsberg had taken the initial lead, which he held for the win. S. Smith,
Solwold and Tim Boychuk of Winterburn, AB also transferred to the A Main.
In heat two, young lion Brad Sweet of Grass Valley, CA led the first 6 laps
with Joe Ramaker getting by when Sweet slid high in turn four. Also making
the cut to the A Main were Kent and Carter.
Heat three went to M. Smith over his brother D. Smith with Wilskey and
Barnes following.
The final heat was all Murphy’s, who led wire to wire over Dan Menne of Ft.
Jones, CA, Allard and Crockett.
Dash results read Barnes, Crockett, Kent, Solwold, Carter and Wilskey.
Fast time for the night went to Solwold with an 11.279 sec lap.
The tour now moves to Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, OR on Wednesday July
16, 2003

"Northwest Speedweek" Medford Opener Goes To Crockett Monday Night
July 14th 2003
By George Hespe
Southern Oregon Speedway - Medford, OR
Monday, July 14, 2003
It was fast, smooth and quick for Roger Crockett at Southern Oregon Speedway
Monday night, as the Eugene, OR driver went wire to wire in winning the U.S.
Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour's "Northwest Speedweek"
opener on
the third mile Medford, OR track.
"It was good to start on the pole, because there are some real good drivers
in the field", stated the defending Northern Sprint Tour champion after the
race. I couldn't tell what was going on behind me, but I knew I couldn't let
up at all. My biggest concern was that someone would spin out in front of
me."
Getting off to a fast start the top five shook out to Auburn, CA's Andy
Forsberg, Shawna Wilskey of Mt. Vernon, WA, Dale Smith of Cottage Grove, OR
and Chico, CA hot shoe Steven Allard running nose to tail behind Crockett.
Within 6 laps Crocket's fast pace had him with a 10 car length lead over
Wilskey as Allard and Forsberg diced for third another 10 car lengths back.
By lap 10 the field was well spread around the oval with lots of good races
for position from 6th to past mid-pack. Jason Solwold of Sedro Woolley, WA,
up from the 'B' Main, had moved to 4th and previous Speedweek winners Brent
Kaeding of Campbell, CA and Fresno, CA veteran Steve Kent were battling for
7th with Edmonton, AB's Jeff Hodgson and Barry Martinez of Lynnwood, WA
joining the fray at times.
The first of three amber lights came on when Solwold and Wilskey got
together in the first turn just after Allard had taken 2nd place from
Wilskey on the front straight. The contact had both cars spinning with
Solwold continuing but not Wilskey. Although her run at the front was over,
Wilskey worked back to a 12th place finish. During the yellow flag period,
Forsberg exited the track to the pits and did not return.
Dale Smith brought out the yellow again two laps later with a spin and at
the restart it was Crockett with two lapped cars for a buffer over Allard,
Solwold, Hodgson, Kent and Kaeding.
Although the track was changing toward a single groove as the race wore
down, Martinez, Central Point, OR's Billy Nutter and Jay Cole of Shelton, WA
having a very close fight for 7th behind Kent and Kaeding, who had now
changed position with Kaeding in 5th.
As Allard and Solwold fought for second place, Crockett again pulled away,
opening a quarter of a lap lead on the duo before the last caution for
Everett, WA's Jayme Barnes who stopped in turn two on lap 26 after contact
with another car.
On the final restart Crockett had no lapped car buffer but there was not
much doubt as to the winner as he again pulled away from the pack. Martinez
moved to press Kent with a pair of laps left on the books but came up short
at the line.
Following the racing action Allard thanked the Finley family for providing
him with a great ride. He also commented, "I knew Jason was there, because
I
kept seeing his wheel along side me. But, he ran a good safe race and it was
great."
"Third after three spins, not bad," commented Solwold, who had spun
twice in
his heat and had to race the B-Main. "I just had to be patient and wait
till
others got out of the groove. I haven't been on the road this year and I was
a little nervous that I would be out of touch with other tracks. It was good
and we're ready to try again for the win."
The B-Main got off to a shaky start, with first a spin by Chad Hillier of
Sedro Woolley, WA and then on the restart a car failed to accelerate
mid-pack causing enough contact in the field to put Grass Valley, CA's Brad
Sweet out with front end damage.
A last lap spin in his heat put Kaeding into the B-Main, then slower cars
cost him some spots there, but at the checkered he was leading the pack and
into the "A" Feature event.
Solwold led the way for the first 12 laps of the 15-lap B-Main with Kaeding
working to 2nd by lap 5. A lap 9 yellow helped close the gap, and Kaeding
took the point with a back straight pass on lap 13.
Wayne Williams of Monterey, CA took the original 2nd place spot with he and
Kaeding almost spinning as they made contact on the back straight on lap 4.
Williamson dropped back as Richard Brace, Jr. of Auburn, CA and Cole went
wheel to wheel for third with first Brace, then Cole and finally Brace
getting the position. Williamson had to settle for alternate and missed the
transfer to the 'A' Main.
Nampa, ID driver Shawn Smith went wire to wire to take the 10-lap C-Main
event. The closest racing was between Dan Dunlap of Renton, WA and Joe
Ramaker of Boise, ID for the number two spot. Unfortunately, after 8 laps of
nose to tail running contact in turn one slowed them enough to let Kevin
Sharrah of Chico, CA make a pass on the high side and they both missed the
transfer to the B-Main. Following Ramaker to fill out the top five was Denny
Miller of Stony Plain, AB.
Heat race action saw a great race between Martinez and Kaeding in the first
heat. With Martinez leading, Kaeding tried several times to make a pass with
Martinez closing the door each time Kaeding poked his nose under him. On the
final lap the made contact in turn three with Kaeding spinning to a stop
high on the track and Martinez taking the checkered flag. Following across
the line with transfer positions were Hodgson, Kent and D. Smith.
Heat two saw Nutter take the lead from Hillier on lap 2 and go to the win.
With Hillier dropping back, it was Geoff Beck of Morinville, AB, Peter
Murphy of Sydney, AU and Forsberg getting the move to the feature event.
Jimmy Carter of Cloverdale, BC took heat thereafter following Dan Menne of
Ft. Jones CA for 7 laps. Crockett took 2nd on lap 9 with Jimmy Trulli of
Placerville, CA getting g the last transfer spot.
The final heat went to Barnes who led from green to checkered. Trailing were
Allard, Wilskey and Shain Matthews of Marysville, CA.
Setting the A-Feature first six line up, the dash results were Crockett,
Forsberg, Allard, Hodgson, D. Smith and Wilskey.
Fast time for the night went to Hodgson with a 12.344 sec lap.

The U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour travels to Grays Harbor
Raceway in Elma, WA on Saturday, June 7th, for the first of four 2003
appearances at the three-tenth mile high banked clay oval.
Going into the fourth race of the season, defending champion, Roger Crockett
of Eugene, OR currently leads the race to the 2003 championship with a total
of 273 points. Crockett, with two feature event wins already this year looks
to be a strong contender for another on Saturday.
Following Crockett in the points race is Cottage Grove, OR driver Dale Smith
with 261 points. Smith has three 3rd place finishes so far and is due for a
win. In third place is three time Northern Sprint Tour champion Shawna
Wilskey with 229 points. Wilskey, running out of Mt. Vernon, WA has a second
place finish and was leading the points going into the third race when
mechanical problems knocked her out of competition early in the race.
Jeff Hodgson, coming all the way from St. Albert, Alberta, Canada to race
with the NST group, sits in fourth place with 222 points. In fifth with 219
points is Sedro Woolley, WA’s Chad Hiller. Barry Martinez, out of Lynnwood,
WA fills out the top six with a win and 198 points going into the weekend.
Other top drivers expected to be on hand on Saturday are Shawn Smith of
Nampa, ID, father and son Jay and Jayme Barnes of Everett, WA, Dawn-L
Morrison from Millet, AB, Canada, Ron Myska out of Fairfield, CA, Jason
Solwold of Burlington, WA, Shelton, WA’s Jay Cole and Randy Van Aagten, John
Tharp of Snohomish, WA and Marvin Smith of Cottage Grove, OR.
Racing in the first three events of the year had plenty of close fast
action, with none of the top drivers running away from the competition.
Closely matched in both equipment and talent, any driver in the top ten is a
threat to win at any race.
Both Wilskey and Crockett showed up at the Grays Harbor Raceway program last
week to get some track time before this weekend. Wilskey took the win with
Crockett edging out Tharp for second place with two laps to go.
Car count average so far this year has been thirty-four and with a large
home track group, a 40+ car count is probable. Fans and racers alike are
likely to see some very fast action on the Grays Harbor Raceway clay.

U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour Winner Disqualified
(May 26th 2003) Cottage Grove, Oregon- Following post race technical inspection
at Cottage Grove Speedway Sunday night, Central Point, OR veteran driver
Billy Nutter was disqualified for an illegal fuel injection system, with the feature
win now going to second place finisher Roger Crockett of Eugene, OR.
The disqualification of Nutter moves Dale Smith of Cottage Grove, OR into
second place and Everett, WA driver Jayme Barnes to third.
With the disqualification Nutter forfeits all money won and all points
earned for the night.
This marks the first time in the eight year history of Northern Sprint Tour
that a winner has been disqualified.

U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour Win To Nutter At ‘The Grove’
Action was fast, furious and close as the final race of the U.S. Smokeless
Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour triple-header ended at Cottage Grove
Speedway in Cottage Grove, OR on Sunday night. Central Point, OR veteran
driver Billy Nutter held off a very determined Roger Crockett on an edge of
the seat final eight laps of the feature event to win by barely a car length
after leading all 30 circuits around the quarter-mile clay oval.
“I thought I was jinxed,” stated a jubilant Nutter in the winner’s circle.
Picking up his third Northern Sprint Tour win after nearly a four-year dry
spell Nutter exclaimed, “This just feels really great. Running with the
Northern Sprint Tour is really tough and leading is the hardest racing you
can do. Being in second is always easier because you’re looking for the
other guy’s mistake, in stead of not trying not to make any.” “I have to
thank all of my crew, even the help I had last year. And, Cale’s (Carter)
motor had what it took. It’s just great.”
Out of Eugene, OR, Crockett started in third as Nutter took the lead over
Shawna Wilskey at the green flag. With clear track ahead, the leaders were
soon stretched out to back to sixth place. Vern Scever closed the group back
up with a turn two spin on lap 4 but by lap 9 the top three; Nutter, Mt.
Vernon, WA’s Wilskey and Crocket were in traffic with Jayme Barnes of
Everett, WA, Cottage Grove’s Marvin Smith and Chad Hillier of Sedro Woolley
close behind.
With the top five running close and working the traffic very well, Crockett
took over second on lap 15 from Wilskey and started closing on the still
leading Nutter. Wilskey coasted to a stop with a broken rear end on her
machine on lap 21, bringing out the yellow flag.
At the restart green flag, local hero Dale Smith took over second from
Crockett but lost it in a race down the backstretch.
Racing came to a halt on the 23rd circuit of the oval when Steve Walker of
Shelton, WA tagged a spinning Ron Myska and flipped on the back straight. Al
of this happened as M. Smith, Myska, Glenn Borden, Jr. and Saturday night
feature winner Barry Martinez were dicing for position mid-pack.
On the restart Crockett’s front wing’s front mount broke, giving lift
instead of down force to the front end. Nutter was able to open a small lead
as Crockett, with some problems in the corners, had D. Smith closing on his
rear nerf bar and putting on pressure for the number two spot.
With just three laps to go, traffic was impeding Nutter’s progress and
Crockett was again closing. Coming down to the final lap Crockett cut off D.
Smith in a try for a pass and then made a final Banzi try for the lead out
of the final corner. Nutter found the power to take the win as the top three
finished with just a few feet of distance between them.
Following the event Crockett stated, “It was pretty hard to hold onto at
times after the wing came up, but I have to congratulate Billy on his win.
He ran a hard race. Even with tonight’s problem and last night’s troubles we
had a good weekend and took home one win. You can’t give up and we are
looking forward to the next race in two weeks and going for another win
then.”
Dale Smith finished the weekend with over $3000, three 3rd place finishes
and a solid start on a run for the championship. Dale commented after the
race, “I probably should have had a couple of seconds but I’ll take the
thirds, the money and the points. It all helps and we will head into the
Grays Harbor Raceway show looking for a win”.
Attrition in the B-main was high with only six cars taking the checkered
flag behind winner Jeff Hodgson. Hodgson, of Edmonton, AB led all 15 laps
with Nampa, ID driver Shawn Smith dogging his rear bumper for over half the
race before retiring with motor woes.
Rookie Mark Torres brought out the yellow on laps two and seven, falling
victim to the two spin rule for the first time and Mike Griffith fell out on
lap six with mechanical problems.
After giving Hodgson a good battle for the lead, and dicing with Martinez
for his second place spot, S. Smith coasted to a stop on the back chute with
a major oil leak and a disappointing ending to what had been a great race.
On restart Greg Brown slowed going into turn one and was tagged by Tony
Menard. Menard. Menard made about 5 cartwheels, shedding and bending enough
parts in the process to put him out for the night but he didn’t flip.
Although Martinez closed the gap on the leader in the last five laps,
Hodgson never faltered and held for the win. Following the top two to the
checkered flag and into the A-main were Jay Barnes and Vern Scevers. Melissa
Yates missed making the feature for the second night by one position.
Crockett took the lead over Randy Van Aagten on lap 4 of the first heat and
held for the win.
In heat two Mike Morris and D. Smith got together on the opening lap in the
second turn but both drove out of it with no problems. On lap 2, M. Smith
and Torres made contact with Torres then into Roger Oudman. Oudman, of Sedro
Woolley, WA, took a wild ride, landing at the flag-stand but walking away
unhurt.
On restart, the Martinez #66 came out of gear causing an accordion effect
that took it’s toll on the front end of D. Smith’s car. Smith came back out,
minus a left front shock and with some bent front-end parts, and still
managed to wrest second place away from his brother Marvin.
Kevin Etchison led all laps in the third heat with Myska and Nutter
providing the best action as they diced for the runner-up spot. Wilskey took
the final A-main transfer spot from Harris on lap four.
In the final heat it was Rory Price winning with no trouble. Matt Rogers,
Walker and Borden, Jr followed him to the line.
Wilskey ran away with the dash race, running a lap faster than the fast
qualifiers time, which was an 11.306 run by Crockett.

Martinez Takes U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour SOS Win
Roger Crockett appeared to be safely on the way to his second U.S. Smokeless
Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour win, but it was dash winner Barry Martinez
of Lynnwood, WA in the winner’s circle when race two of the triple header
weekend came to a close at Southern Oregon Speedway in Medford, OR on
Saturday night.
The Eugene, OR hot shoe, and Friday night’s winner, saw his large lead and
the chance for two wins in a row evaporate when two cars came together
directly in front of him on lap 23 of the 30 lap feature event.
Martinez led off on an opening green that quickly turned red when Elk Grove,
CA’s Gary Morgan flipped in turn three as he and Everett, WA driver Jayme
Barnes made contact. Barnes bounded off all four corners of his machine but
somehow managed to keep from getting upside down. Eugene’s Kevin Etchison
was collected in the melee but escaped with little damage. Morgan was out;
Barnes made it back in, and the rest of the field lined up for a complete
restart.
With Martinez again out front Crockett tried to repeat his original start
pass on Shawna Wilskey of Mt. Vernon, WA for second, but this time it didn’t
work and it took him another 8 laps to make the inside pass through turn
four to grab the position and go to work reeling in Martinez.
Although Martinez had opened a good lead early on, by the time Crockett was
putting the move on Wilskey the leader was finding his way blocked by heavy
traffic, much to Crockett’s pleasure. Crockett took the point on lap 13
exiting turn four and soon had a two lapped cars cushion to work with.
Following the top two were Wilskey, Dale Smith and Steven Allard. Smith, of
Cottage Grove, OR and Allard, the Chico, CA based driver who was shoeing the
Jason Finley car for the night, put on a long and close battle as they
swapped fourth in what was one of the tightest battles of the race.
Edmonton, AB’s Jeff Hodgson, Steven Tiner of Elverta, CA and Jay Barnes of
Everett, WA entered into the fray at times but spent most of the race dicing
with each other for the next three positions.
On lap 23, Dan Menne of Ft. Jones, CA and Rory Price of Seattle, WA tangled
directly in front of Crockett at the exit of the last turn and with nowhere
to go Crockett slid to a halt, and his lead vanished.
Once again in the lead and with an open track ahead of him, Martinez jumped
to an 8 – 10 car lead over Wilskey and the field with Smith and Allard again
going nose to tail. The final stop came with five laps to go when Price lost
his left rear wheel at the end of the front straight and took a nasty
looking flip, but was unhurt.
With a clear track again, Martinez was untouchable the final five laps as
Wilskey held second and Smith barely edged Allard for third.
In the winner’s circle the highly elated Martinez had nothing but praise for
his crew. “Wow!! This feels great”, he commented. “Roger clearly had this
one won, but that’s what happens sometimes in racing.” “We have a new crew
and to win after only two races is just great. I’m really proud of my crew.
We’re definitely gonna’ try for another win tomorrow night.”
“I’m sure Roger had it won”, said Wilskey after the race, “but lapped
traffic plays a big part sometimes. I think we had more for Barry but we
lost a bleeder and the handling was not as good as at the start. We’re going
for the win tomorrow night.”
Third place finisher Smith remarked, “Not a bad night. The track went one
grove and you couldn’t go high, but the cars in one piece, we had a good
finish last night and we will be at our home track tomorrow. Things are good
and we plan on making a run for the championship.”
The B-main once provided action aplenty as the battle for the four transfer
positions to the A-main had everyone hard on the go pedal. Hodgson grabbed
the lead on the green over Tiner, Chris Scott and Melissa Yates, with the
top four quickly opening a good lead over the rest of the cars. The field
closed on a lap 4 yellow when Mark Torres spun on the back straight and
David Gilmore slid off turn two. After another yellow on the restart for a
stalled Roger Oudman on the back chute, action again resumed with the top
five the same and dicing mid pack for position between a pair of number
twelve cars, Tony Menard & Randy Pierce.
This all came to a sudden halt on lap 11 when Gilmore and Scott tangled in
turn four and the two number twelve cars did the same in turn three. Of the
four, only Menard was able to continue.
With the shortened field again at speed, Hodgson roared out of turn four
headed for a white flag and was barely able to avoid Torres, who was pulling
back onto the track after a series of spins he had executed coming out of
the turn. Although he almost came to a complete stop, Hodgson was able to
get back to racing speed before Tiner could overcome the lead Hodgson had
built up.
Also making the move to the A-main was Yates and Price with Anthony Nunes
the alternate.
In the heat race action, Crockett took the high line from 6th to 2nd, lost
it to a yellow and then did it again on the restart. Ron Myska held the lead
for 5 laps before Crockett went high again in four for the pass and the win.
Heat two saw Shawn Smith hold off Allard for almost half the race with Smith
holding off the competition to keep second place.
Marvin Smith easily took the third heat with the race for the last two
transfer spots a heated tree way battle between Wilskey, Jay Barnes and R.
Smith, with R. Smith losing out.
Nutter showed the way to the checkered flag in the final heat, which was a
fast 10 lap run, as he led flag to flag over Gary Morgan.
In the dash, Martinez got a good run at the green, taking the lead over
Wilskey, and went on to the win. Crockett had fast time for the night with a
12.587 second lap.

Defending Champion Wins
2003 U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Season Opener
As the drivers of the 2003 U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour
season opener completed their final lap, defending champion Roger Crockett
of Eugene, OR barely pulled off the win over a fast charging Jason Solwold
on the tight Willamette Speedway clay oval in Lebanon, OR.
Action at the end of the first lap had two cars into the inside wall of the
front straight with Chad Hillier of Sedro Woolley, WA in front. Hillier held
that lead the first 12 laps of the Friday, May 23rd event, but while working
heavy traffic on the next circuit Crockett found a hole exiting turn four to
sneak by for the front spot with Cottage Grove, OR's Dale Smith taking
second place from Hillier a half lap later.
Solwold, of Burlington, WA, had picked up three spots to fourth and was
putting pressure on the top three at the mid-point of the 30 lap feature
event when Ron Myska and Kevin Etchison tangled to bring out the yellow on
lap seventeen with Myska to the pits.
Two laps later rookie Mark Torres spun in the first turn, for a short
slowing of the action, with Solwold moving to third over Smith on the
restart.
Five laps later it was Crockett at the backmarkers and unable to find a way
past Jay Cole, Kevin Etchison and Marvin Smith, all fighting to keep from
going a lap down. While Crockett was holding the low line through the
corners and thwarted in his attempts to pass, Smith, Solwold and Hillier
were almost wing-to-wing behind him as they diced for position. With two to
go, Smith and Solwold was nose to tail behind the winner with Solwold
stealing second from Smith in turn three on the last lap and almost catching
Crockett at the line.
"It was a tough race," commented Crocket in the winner's circle.
"It was
hard to pass, and with lots of marbles high in the corners I had to keep low
to protect my position."
Solwold said, "the lapped cars helped and we had a real good car, but Roger
ran a great race and I'm not sure I could have passed him". Third place
finisher Smith was happy with his finish. "Jason's tough and I should have
stayed low, but we felt if we got a top 10 tonight and went home in one
piece it would be a success. I'm real happy with tonight's results".
The B-main had action a plenty, all of it behind Solwold who led wire to
wire. Solwold's greatest threat was Jimmy Carter of Cloverdale, BC, who
dogged his rear nerf for the first half of the race, and Boise, ID driver
Shawn Smith who took over the second place spot on lap 9 of the 15 lap
event.
A short yellow on lap 6 closed the field and the loss of his left rear wheel
put Peter Murphy on his side two laps later to bring out the red flag. Two
laps later the old adage that it's hard to put more than one car in a
specific spot on the track came true when Jeff Bell of Marysville, WA,
Sydney, Australia's Peter Murphy and Nampa, ID driver Mark Harrison all
tried to claim the same spot exiting turn four. Bell and Murphy flipped,
with Bell getting the most airtime, and Harrison somehow staying on the
ground. All drivers were OK but Bell, who had flipped in his heat, took some
serious damage to his car.
On the restart with Solwold an S. Smith in front, Marvin Smith snatched
third from Carter as John Tharp rounded out the top five.
Heat race action saw Barry Martinez run down Randy Van Aagten in the 5th lap
for the lead and the win. Jay Cole went wire to wire in the front for the
heat two win with Crockett pulling off the same feat in the third heat. Both
heats had red flags, with Bell in the second and rookie David Gilmore in the
third heat.
The final heat went to rookie Mark Torres, running his first sprint car race
and leading flag to flag.
Hillier took the dash win and Solwold set fast time for the night with a
12.412 second lap of the three-tenths mile oval.

Northern Sprint Tour Opens 2003 Season
Posted May 19th 2003
With new series sponsor U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. on board, Northern
Sprint Tour kicks off it's eighth year of bringing the best in action
packed, wheel banging, wing-to-wing Sprint Car racing to the fans of the
great Pacific Northwest. Starting off the 14-race season will be an exciting
three-race weekend in Oregon on May 23rd, 24th and 25th.
The action starts on Friday the 23rd at when the season’s first green
flag flies at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, OR. Last year three-time NST
champion Shawna Wilskey, of Mount Vernon, WA, took the first race of the
season on Willamette’s tight three-tenths mile clay oval, and will surely be
looking for a repeat showing. Be it Wilskey or some other driver, following
the action the seasons first feature event winner and the rest of the
drivers and crews will move south to Southern Oregon Speedway in Medford,
OR.
The fast third mile track at SOS has always provided the fans with
exciting action and Saturday night should be no different. Rick Fauver of
Everett, WA took the first 2002 race at the Medford track in an exciting
race that had him with out brakes at the finish. Behind Fauver a three-way
dice for second had more wheel banging contact that most races have all
night. They may not get as much banging this year, but the action is sure to
be fast and close.
The U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour will finish it’s
Memorial Day Weekend opener with a rare Sunday visit to The Grove in Cottage
Grove, OR. The first race at The Grove in 2002 did not come until Speed Week
in July with California’s Brent Kaeding taking the win. The last winner
Cottage Grove’s quarter-mile bullring was Fauver, who made a last lap, last
corner pass to take the September 14th race over Billy Nutter of Central
Point, OR. Action is always close on the small track, and The Grove is a
favorite of both racers and fans.
Most of the drivers have already been behind the wheel at various
tracks in California, Oregon and the northwest with some doing very well in
this new season. Two time and defending Northern Sprint Tour champion Roger
Crockett of Eugene, OR has had good success in California, Cottage Grove
OR’s Dale Smith already has a feature win to his credit and 1998 NST
Champion, Burlington, WA’s Jason Solwold, who had three NST wins last
season, has been un-beatable his first three outings of the season.
Three-time NST champion Wilskey, of Mount Vernon, WA, finished 2002 in
second place returns again, looking at the possibility of being the first
four time Champion. Fauver, 1997 NST Champion, will again be with the Bob
Reynolds team looking for another successful year after finishing the 2002
season in third place.
Edmonton, Alberta’s Jeff Hodgson, who placed fourth in the 2002
standings, has been chasing races around the country since early in the year
and has his sights set on a top three in 2003.
Other top Washington drivers ready to take to the clay over the weekend
are Shelton's Jay Cole, Everett driver Jayme Barnes, Barry Martinez of
Lynnwood, Lake Steven’s Travis Hawthorne, Chad Hillier of Sedro Woolley,
John Tharp from Snohomish and Glenn Borden of Raymond.
The Nanaimo, BC based V-Mac team of Scott Aumen and Tony Menard will
make the ferry ride from Vancouver Island to run the season with fellow
Victoria driver Chris Schmelzle expected to make several shows also. Dawn-L
Morrison is again making the long tow from the Edmonton, AB area to chase
the points in 2003.
Along with defending champ Crockett, Oregon will again be providing
their best to thrill the crowds as Cottage Grove's Smith brothers Dale and
Marvin, Bill Nutter, Cale Carder and Ron Smith of Central Point,
Harrisburg's Jeff Thompson and Melissa Yates and Scott Adams of Roseburg are
among those expected to be putting the pedal to the metal in 2003.
Dan Menne of Ft. Jones, CA has a win to his credit already this year
and is always strong in NST action. Jason Finley, also of Ft. Jones is also
out again this year and veteran California driver T.J. Winningham has
returned to the sprint wars.
The U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. Northern Sprint Tour will return to all
three Oregon tracks again later in the year along with appearances at Grays
Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA and Central Washington State Fair Raceway in
Yakima, WA.
