Albertan Wins Big Rig Race July 19th at Western Speedway

WESTERN SPEEDWAY RESULTS
July 19th 2003 Victoria BC Canada-
Cory Riplinger driving a R-Model Mack from Calgary Alberta won the Wilson & Proctor Big Rig Main Event and the Lavender Cup Saturday night in front of a near capacity crowd at Western Speedway. Riplinger, who earlier set fast time with a 20:990, only .0496 of a second off of his own track record, took the lead with only five laps to go in the thirty-lap feature race. Though fourteen Big Rigs were on hand, a record thirteen Big Rigs took the green flag to start the race with Big Rig founder AJ Watson staying in the pits with a malfunctioning turbo in his IHC Loadstar. Kevin Johnson from Rochester Washington took the early lead in his Peterbulit and led for the first seven laps until he was overtaken by Darren Berdahl in a IHC S-Line from Eckville Alberta. Earlier in the evening, Berdahl won the CH TV Smoke Show Competition where the winner is decided by the fans. Berdahl accomplished the most impressive smoke show yet leaving the entire front stretch and grandstands in a huge cloud of smoke receiving a huge ovation from the crowd. As Berdahl began to build a lead, the yellow flag came out for a truck spun in turn four. Mike Hyrd from Calgary spun coming off of turn four coming to rest on the inside curb. After being towed into the pits, Hyrd would rejoin the race. On the restart it was Berdahl leading the way once again building a cushion between him and second place Troy Pidherney who was in a battle for second with Cory Riplinger. Riplinger would take over second place on lap fifteen and set his sights on the leader. Each lap Riplinger made ground on the leader and eventually caught the leader as Berdahl was being hung up by slower traffic. With only five laps to go, Riplinger put the move on Berdahl as the two entered turn one. Riplinger nosed underneath the leader and as the two accelerated down the backstretch, it was Riplinger taking the lead into turn three. Riplinger would go on for the victory with Berdahl placing second after a last lap effort to take the lead back when he tried the outside groove to overtake the eventual winner. Troy Pidherney would end up third with Peter Van Dyck placing fourth. Glen Creed from Langford, the defending race champion placed an impressive fifth. Creed earlier in the night of action took the win in the very exciting fast heat.
Dan Morneau made it two in a row and three for the season as he won the thirty five-lap Old Time Stock Car feature race. Morneau took the lead from George Jenson on lap twenty-five for the win. Jenson held the lead for fifteen laps after taking the lead from Glen Danchuk from Surrey. Dan Morneau also was the recipient of the "Loghouse Pub Driver of the Week" award for his win back on June 14th. Rich Bennett from Duncan would place third in the event and jokingly stated on the podium that his eyesight was not 100 percent in the trophy dash. Bennett was in the battle for the win but pulled into the pits one lap early mistaking the white flag for the chequered flag. He was very happy with his third place finish in the main event. The Old Time Stock Cars are nearing the end of a hectic race schedule racing five times in six weeks at four different tracks. The drivers will have a well deserved one week off after the Western Speedway 50th Season Celebration before heading back on the road.

This coming weekend is the Western Speedway 50th Season Celebration. The night of racing and festivities will include four local classes of cars including the Island Sprint Cars, Late Model Sportsman Series, Glen Lake Inn Stock Car Series and the Old Time Stock Cars. There will also be a special visit from the "Golden Wheels Racing Fraternity" based out of the USA featuring cars and drivers from the early years of racing. Local racing club LITRA that sanctions Demo Racing at Western Speedway will be sponsoring a Total Destruction Demolition Derby. The night will be capped off with the BIG Times Colonist FIREWORKS DISPLAY! Western Speedway will open early and will start the show 1/2 hour earlier than usual. Gates will open at 4:30, with qualifying at 5:30 and racing at 6:30. Admissions are Adults $14, Youth 11-17 & OAP $11, Kids 10 - under are only $5.

Wolf Captures 150 Lap Late Model Challenge Series Feature July 5th 2003 at Western Speedway

July 5th 2003 Victoria, BC Canada - Ron Wolf from Auburn Washington in a '00 Pontiac captured the B 107.3 "150" Saturday Night at Western Speedway in front of 1,800 race fans as part of the 32nd Annual Canada 200. Wolf who earlier in the evening set fast time with a 16:994, waited until near the end to make his winning move. Points leader Jason Hedrick in a '97 Grand Prix from Spanaway Washington started on the pole after the invert was decided at six. Hedrick immediately took the lead and held it until lap 100. There were several yellow flags that kept the field of eighteen cars bunched up with the first yellow flag waving for a crash n the back stretch involving Billy Coats from Bothell and Mike Walters from Portland Oregon. As the two drivers entered the backstretch, they tangled sending Coats spinning into turn three and Walters making heavy contact with the retaining wall. Both drivers were not hurt, but the damage to their cars prevented them from rejoining the race. On the restart it was once again Hedrick showing the way with Surrey's Rob Angus running second, Ron Wolf third and Jay Sauls fourth. The top four drivers would dice it up until the next caution flag when Jimmy Johnson from Orting Washington tangled with Bucky Johnston from Poulsbo.

Both drivers were able to continue. Once again it was Hedrick leading the way on the restart with Angus second, Wolf third and Sauls fourth. On lap seventy-two, Wolf was able to put a move on Angus to take over second place and set his sights on the leader. Jay Sauls would follow through sending Angus back to fourth. Wolf put pressure on the leader but was unable to make the pass. The yellow flag would wave once again this time for an incident in turn one involving Victoria's Darrell Midgley and Tacoma's Jim Losch. Both cars touched and spun with Midgley narrowly escaping making contact with the turn one wall. On the restart, with both spun cars able to continue, it was Hedrick holding off the challenge of Wolf and continuing to lead the race. The red flag would wave on lap 98 when Rob Angus spun in turn one coming to a stop facing traffic. As Angus came to a stop, Josh Braudway spun entering the turn to avoid the crash but became a big part of it. Braudway collided with Angus as he slid backwards into Angus ending up on top of the hood of Angus' car. The rear of Braudway's car had to be lifted by one tow truck while the other tow truck pulled Angus' car out from underneath. Both drivers were not injured with Braudway able to continue. Angus had suffered too much damage and was done for the night.

On the restart Hedrick took the field to the green flag but it was Ron Wolf who brought the field to lap 101 as Wolf got underneath Hedrick in turn one to take the lead. Sauls would follow Wolf through for second, sending Hedrick back to third. The top three drivers would stay in those positions until lap 146 when Hedrick made a move on Sauls for second and was then making a bid for the lead. Hedricks caught Wolf but could not make the pass and would have to settle for second behind Wolf. Jay Sauls would finish third and Victoria's Darrell Midgley would come back for a fourth place finish.

Brent Morris made it two in a row and four for the season as he won the Glen Lake Inn Stock Car Fifty Lap feature race. Trevor Emery, who earlier won the "B" Trophy Dash, grabbed the early lead and held it for twelve laps until surrendering the lead to Sooke's George Grant. Grant would keep the lead until he was overtaken by Morris on lap twenty-four. The yellow flag would come out only once for an incident involving several drivers, Cody Brown, who was in a battle for position found himself in a three wide situation with Kirk Clement and John Cayer. Cayer and Clement would spin with Clement receiving body damage to his Buick but both drivers were able to continue. On the restart it was Morris all the way leaving Grant, Courtenay's Don Hogarth and Billy Stidston in a three-car battle for second. Hogarth managed several times to get up beside Grant but could not muster the power needed to make the pass. Grant would hang on for second, with Hogarth third and Stidston fourth.

This coming Saturday Night, July 12th, it is the return of the "Weekend Warriors". Steve Drane Harley Davidson presents the Mid Season Double Points Championship for the Demolition Cars, Demo Trucks, Figure 8's and Claimers. Gates open @ 5, Qualifying @ 6, all the racing begins at 7 pm. The Figure 8 cars will also be racing for the "Lavender Cup" as part of the Langford Lavender Festival.

On July 19th, the BIG RIGS return, bigger and better than ever. Twelve of the 10,000 pound, pavement pounding monsters have entered from Alberta, Washington along with local Glen Creed, the defending champion of the race. The classic Old Time Stock Cars will be joining the BIG RIGS as part of the night's events. Watch here next week for info on advance ticket sales and gate times.

Drivers End Dry Spells June 7th

June 7, 2003(Victoria, BC)- Two drivers ended winning dry spells Saturday night at Western Speedway in front of a near capacity crowd who were entertained from the drop of the first green flag. Jim Young, who hails from Langley and makes the trip to Western Speedway each race night, won his first main event in over four years, his longest dry spell ever. Brad Smith, who was driving for Matt Polley and earlier in the evening won the “A” Trophy Dash and “Fast Heat”, led the final six laps of the twenty five lap race up until the last turn on the white flag lap. As the drivers were battling their way through turns three and four, the right front tire went down on Smith forcing him to go high thus allowing Young to make the move for the lead on the inside groove. Young held off point leader Marty “McFly” Hansen as the two drag raced to the checkered flag with a limping Brad Smith following for the third place position. Craig Holfeld, who is currently second in the championship point standings, rounded out the top four. Almost every car in the Demo Car  feature race received a black flag at one time or another from LITRA President Roy Haywood who controlled the flags for the main events.

Gary Williams also ended a multi year dry spell winning his first main event in over five years. Williams, who earlier won the “Fast Heat”, had fast time setter Mark Lefebvre on his tailgate as the checkered flag fell. The race was red flagged when Cory Nightingale drove hard into the box of Dave Cates as the two entered turn one. Nightingale would end up on top of Cate’s tailgate and box, rolling over up side down off of Cate’s truck and landing on his roof. Nightingale was uninjured in the crash and after a few repairs was able to rejoin the race three laps down. Incidentally, Nightingale at the time of the crash was receiving a black flag from LITRA, who gave the driver a stop and go penalty after he rejoined the race. In HOT 103 Victory Square, Williams was ecstatic with his long awaited win and vowed it wont be his last as he has a new truck under construction. Williams is celebrating his 25th year of racing at Western Speedway this year.

Doug Hopwood was eventually declared the winner in the twenty-five-lap Claimer main event. Hopwood, who started near the back of the pack made his way through traffic taking the lead on the eighteenth lap. Rob McDonald led up to lap eighteen after taking the lead on lap seven. McDonald tried several different times to regain the lead from Hopwood but could not make the pass. The race was yellow flagged on lap fifteen when Richard Holland crashed in turn two stalling in the racing groove. Holland was done for the night. On the restart, McDonald led the way but with the pack tightened up after the yellow flag, Hopwood was unstoppable. Twenty-Four cars took the green flag with most cars running at the end of the race.

Chris Hamber made it three wins so far this year winning his third main event of the year in the Figure 8’s. Hamber battled aggressively throughout the race with “A” Trophy Dash winner Roger Beck until Beck was forced to pit with only a few laps to go. Hamber had only to deal with four other cars at the end as attrition took its toll on the Figure 8’s. Earlier in the evening, Hamber also set fast time.

Sprint Cars Roll into Town Saturday:

This coming Saturday Night, the “Winged Warriors” return to Western Speedway for the running of the Times Colonist Strawberry Cup. This year’s race is billed as the Canada vs. USA Sprint Car Shootout. Sprint Cars are expected from as far away as Southern Oregon, Washington and of course BC. A full field of Sprint Cars is expected for the race, which has a purse worth over $10,000 US. Four time NSRA Super Sprint Car Driver Trevor Montgomery will be qualifying for this race driving the car usually driven by Randy Price. Price, who cannot attend the race, had asked Montgomery to shoe his car after learning the NSRA Super Sprints are on an off weekend. Defending Sprint Car Champion Jeff Montgomery will also be one of the favorites along with a host of other local talent such as Darren Yates, Randy Vincent, Duane Zeinstra, Britt Gillett, Mark Fisher and more. Rob Scott will return in Ron Douglas’ roadster, out for the first time this year with a new sponsor, Scotty Marine. Scotty Marine is also sponsoring the “Dash for Cash”, a race between the fastest Canadian Sprint Car and the fastest USA Sprint Car. The two top cars will run two, two lap events swapping inside and outside grooves at the start of each segment. The winner will receive a bonus $250 from Scotty Marine. Gates will open @5, with qualifying @6, all the racing action gets underway @ 7pm.

Bowers, Wade Capture First Wins May 31st At Western Speedway

May 31st 2003 (Victoria, BC) - Three first time winners pulled into HOT 103 Victory Square Saturday Night at Western Speedway in front of just over 1000 race fans who were treated to an excellent night of racing.
Lance Wade, driving a 2002 Monte Carlo, captured his first Sportsman Series main event win since joining the series last year. Gord Quaite, in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix took the early lead but surrendered it to Lance Wade on lap six of the fifty-lap feature race. The following lap the red flag waved for Robbie Haslam who crashed hard in turn three.

Haslam, who debuted his new Sportsman car, a '99 Monte Carlo, and won the "A" Trophy Dash earlier in the evening in his first ever Sportsman race, tangled with Morley Axelson on the backstretch as the two were heading into turn three. Haslam would hit the turn three grass and slide hard into the concrete barrier protecting the light standard. Haslam hit with such force that the front of his car lifted six feet into the air before coming to rest. Haslam was not injured in the crash but was done for the night. On the restart it was Lance Wade showing the way with Langley's Dave Hemrich running a strong second when he and Tim Christy got together in turn one sending Hemrich around while Christy managed to keep going. The yellow flag would come out for Hemrich who was able to re-fire his car and stay on the lead lap.

On the restart, it was once again Wade showing the way with Christy all over the rear bumper trying to make the pass. Meanwhile, a quarter lap behind was the battle for third between Peter Quakenbush, Tony Pallister, Brad Watkins and Dave Hemrich who made his way back through the field. As the laps wound down, Wade held off the challenges of Christy who could not muster enough power to go around Wade or set up the experienced driver for the pass. Wade would take the checkered flag with Christy on the rear bumper for second. Dave Hemrich made the incredible run back through the pack to beat Quakenbush to the line by inches for third with Brad Watkins coming in fifth. Earlier in the evening, Watkins crashed in turn three hitting the berm landing on the Motorcycle track. Watkins and crew worked to make the necessary repairs which included replacing a right front tie rod and repairing the rear end which shifted five inches in the crash which was quite spectacular.

Trevor Bowers won his first main event in the Glen Lake Inn Stock Car Series after chasing the win for five years. Bowers took the lead on lap seven of the thirty-five-lap race, which had only one yellow flag for Langley's Mike Soppit when his engine expired on lap twenty-nine, bunching up the field for the final six laps. On the restart, Bowers managed to hold off the hard charging Brian Clutchey who had Cody Brown who earlier in the evening Cody Brown won his first Trophy Dash of the year all over his rear bumper. Bowers did a great job holding off the challenges of Clutchey and Brown for the final six laps to take the win. It was a popular win with the fans who gave Bowers a great ovation. Clutchey would hang on for second with Brown third and a double duty Robbie Haslam fourth. As the white flag waved, rookie Jesse Dardengo and Gord Wheeler got together on the front stretch sending Wheeler hard into the wall receiving heavy damage to the front of his '69 Nova. Wheeler was not injured in the crash. Three drivers were lucky recipients of $100 each from Dave Horner Construction who gives out $100 each Stock Car race to a driver who finishes out of the top ten. The position is randomly selected with the driver in that position being awarded the $100 bonus. George Grant, Jess Dardengo and Tom Barkanyi were the recipients.

Mike Nyeste made it two in a row capturing the IMS4 Mini Stock thirty lap main event. Nyeste, who also received the Loghouse Pub driver of the week award earlier in the evening for his win on May third, made his way from near the back of the seventeen car field to take the lead on lap twelve. Nyeste took the lead from Dave Isles on a restart after the yellow flag came out for a crash in turn three. Dan Pederson from Nanaimo and defending Mini Stock Champion Gilles Parenteau gathered each other up heading into turn three sending Pederson into the turn three berm and Parenteau into the inside grass sliding into traffic receiving minor front end damage. Both cars were able to continue bet were never a threat to win. Matt Mansell, who earlier won the "A" Trophy Dash and Fast Heat made his way from near the back and took second place away from Kyle Vantreight who set fast time with a 19:292. Mansell would settle for second with Vantreight third and Brian Ford fourth, his best finish since joining the series.

Chris Leclair won his first Motorcycle main event ever dethroning Jeff Evernden who has won every main event so far this year. Jamie Dick placed a close second with Russ Sherman third and Alvin Bergen fourth. The Motorcycles now have a three-week break as the riders ready themselves for the upcoming USA Super Motard Race being held Saturday June 21st at 9 am. Between 75 and 100 riders are expected from as far away as California. This will be the first time for the Super Motards to stage a race in Canada.

This coming weekend, Dave Wheaton Pontiac proudly presents the return of the "Weekend Warriors" The Demolition Cars, Demolition Trucks, Figure 8's and Claimers take over Western Speedway for the sixth race of the year. Marty "McFly" Hansen will be out to defend his championship and his points lead. Hansen has won two main events so far this year and is in a tight points battle with Craig Holfeld ad Greg Sagmoen.

In two weeks time, on June 14th, the Time Colonist Strawberry Cup Race takes place featuring the Canada vs USA Sprint Car Shootout. The Columbia River Sprint Cars will be in town to take on the Island Sprint Cars, which is expected to draw over twenty-four of the "Winged Warriors" from as far away as Oregon.
