April 3, 2004… Tenino, WA- Brandon Finch took his first main event start at South Sound Speedway on Saturday night, April 3rd. It was the 16 year olds first race on a paved track. Finch was nervous early in the day, as was his mother. All their hard work and nervousness paid off when Finch took the checkered flag first in the North Star Yachts and Commercial Drivers Services Sportsman main event. Finch had taken the lead on lap 22 from Jim Moen. Moen got a little out of shape and Finch and Jerry Clark passed him. Moen had led since the first lap of the race. Johnny Cook was in second and after a lap 12 caution, Finch had moved into third. The caution had involved Bryan Bykerk and Mark Jones getting together and then Tom Smitham, having no where else to go, launching over the top of Bykerk’s car. Everyone was fine and Jones and Bykerk even continued to race. Finch moved into second and eventually to the front to win. Jerry Clark finished second and Al Carver finished third. Moen was fourth with Johnny Cook in fifth. Darryl Vickery, who won the dash, was sixth. Carver had earlier in the day broken the track record in qualifying with a 14.90 second lap. Jim Moen and John Boyatt were the winners of the heat races.
Another track record was broken in the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks. Dan Woodward broke his own record with a 15.42 second lap. That’s an average speed of 88.5 MPH. Ron Ehli won the trophy dash. Woodward took the A heat race over Dustin Wilkinson and Bobby Micielli. Paul Hopkins took the B heat with Josh Bradley in second and Greg Kinney in third. Ron Ehli led the first eight laps of the main event before Dustin Wilkinson took over. Ehli got into a spin with Dan Woodward right after that and both were sent to the back. A second caution came on lap twelve when Bobby Micielli spun. Dan Woodward was running behind Wilkinson when he left the track on lap 27 due to brake failure. Ehli had now moved back into second with Micielli in third. After 35 laps Dustin Wilkinson was the winner. Bobby Micielli took second on the last lap and Ron Ehli was third. Paul Hopkins was fourth with Josh Bradley in fifth and Bill Posh Jr. in sixth.
Doug Shaffer took the track record in the Cut Rate Auto Parts Economy 4-Cylinders with a 17.03 second lap. Duane Lacy took the dash. Tim Garske took the B heat race with Mike Hayne in second and Kevin Koepke in third. Tom Keehan was the winner of the A heat race with Tony Bartlotti in second and Duane Lacy in third. There were two cautions before even a lap was complete in the main event. In the first Tim Garske and Jack Allen got together and spun. In the second Mike and Floyd Hayne smashed into each other causing major damage to both cars. However, they both returned to the race later on. Garske took the lead after two laps with Duane Lacy in second and Tony Bartlotti in third. In a smooth move on lap 20, Bartlotti took first moving Garske to second and Lacy to third. Lacy took second on lap 23 and McGregor took third on lap 27. After 30 laps, Bartlotti was the winner followed by Lacy, McGregor, Garske and Kyle Hartman.
Steven Daskam dominated the Future Stars after taking the fastest time, dash, heat and main event. Austin Thom was second in the main event with Matt Benefield, Harrison Scherer, Kayla Roberts, Dallas Melby and Aaron Stanley in tow. Cody Stewart clocked in the fastest for the Open Division Mini-Cups but BJ Brown took the dash. Stewart was back on top in the heat race. Steven Roberts was the main man in the main event. He led all 25 laps. Stewart was second with JJ Hickle in third and Brooke Lefor in fourth.
