Stewart wins NSCS Brownfield preliminary
Andrew Kunas, NSCS Publicist...

ELMA, Wash. - Less than three weeks after beating the World of Outlaws at Grays Harbor Raceway, Shane Stewart came back to Elma and again found victory lane, this time in the preliminary event of the inaugural Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge.

For Stewart, who calls Oklahoma home, it was his fourth victory in seven starts with the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series driving for Mike and Janie Doyle. Following his WoO victory in 410 sprint cars, it was his first win in a 360 sprint car, on the 3/8-mile, high-banked clay oval. Stewart and Doyle earned $1,200 for their efforts.

Stewart, who won three out of five races to win the NSCS Northwest Speed Week title in July, started the 25-lap event on the pole in the No. 1 Shaver-powered Maxim and took the lead on the first two attempts to start the race. After two red flags, however, Puyallup, Wash.'s Mitch Olson made the third start the charm and took the lead.

Olson entered the night 66 points behind Medford's Roger Crockett in the NSCS point standings and was in position to gain ground on Crockett, who had to come out of the B-Main for only the second time this season and started eighth. Olson led 19 laps in the Mike Olson No. 98m Rocket, withstanding repeated challenges by Stewart and using slower cars to his advantage.

Crockett, who finished fifth in the Henderson Motorsports No. 7N Eagle, may have gotten his biggest break of the year regarding the points chase, as Olson noticeably began to struggle to get through the turns on lap 18. On lap 20, Stewart made his move, passing Olson on the high side going through turn two. On lap 24, Olson came to a stop in turn two with a shredded right rear tire that resulted in other damage to the rear of the car, ending his night. Scored 16th, Olson's promising run instead resulted in losing more ground.

Stewart would lead the final six laps to score the victory over British Columbia's Travis Rutz.

"It was good race between me and Mitch," Stewart said. "My third start wasn't as good as my first two and he got around me. His car got a little free toward the end and this car never stopped going forward. The slicker (the track) got, the better I was."

Rutz started the feature fourth and ran third until inheriting second when Olson's night ended. Rutz's attempt to make a run on Stewart on the final restart on lap 24 failed, but the 19-year-old scored his best finish of the year in NSCS competition in the Rutz Racing No. 8 Richmond-powered Triple X entry. His runner-up was also his third consecutive top-five finish.

"I'm feeling really good," said Rutz, who unofficially moved past Bill Nutter into third in the standings. "To even run with Shane is something to be proud of. I wasn't going to stress over one position. I just wanted to roll it into the trailer. It's all about tomorrow."

What Rutz was referring to was the point system for the Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge, virtually identical to the old Evergreen State Sprint Challenge. Points from Friday's event will added two points accumulated during Saturday's qualifying session and heat races to determine main event line-ups.

Another driver feeling good about his chances at Saturday's $10,092 first prize is Tacoma, Wash.'s Shawn Rice, who finished third in the RAM Racing No. 76 Shark-powered Rocket.

"I gotta feel good, coming in third tonight," Rice said. "Maybe we get a we a good draw and hopefully be in the top five, top three in points. I feel like I put myself in a pretty good position."

Snohomish, Wash. driver Seth Bergman's good run in his brand new race car continued as he scored his fourth top-five finish in as many starts that car, three of them with the NSCS. Running fifth with two laps remaining, Bergman drove his family's No. 23a Wesmar-powered Eagle past Crockett for the fourth position, despite not having properly functioning brakes.

Quick qualifier Tayler Malsam, who expects to run the full ARCA schedule in 2008, finished sixth in the Rudeen Racing / Malsam Motorsports No. 26 Maxim, followed by Nutter in his own No. 3N Zeitler.

The long-tow award went to Knoxville, Iowa's Joe Beaver, a relative of the Brownfield Family. Beaver, a regular at Knoxville Raceway, made his first racing appearance at Grays Harbor Raceway a good one, finishing eighth after starting 11th in his No. 53 Ostrich-powered Maxim.

The fourth and final red flag of the A-Main came as the checkered flag was being waved. Nick Engberg and Jonathan Allard, the last two cars out of ten on the lead lap, were involved in a scary accident that saw Allard, the former Golden State Challenge champion out of California, flip upside down and go through the wall between turns three and four. Allard emerged from his car, reportedly unharmed.

Engberg and Allard were scored as the first two cars a lap down, with Engberg earning ninth in the Ken Engberg No. 4 Rocket and Allard tenth in the Main Racing No. 35a JEI.

Placerville, Calif. visitor Jimmy Trulli finished 12th and Alberta's Tyler Pinceman was scored 14th. Grays Harbor Raceway champion Glenn Borden Jr. of Raymond, Wash. finished 15th after being involved in an earlier accident with Robby Vaughn and Steve Kilcup. Vaughn, the leading NSCS Rookie of the Year candidate, was scored 18th and Kilcup, who recently claimed his second straight Skagit Speedway championship, was credited with 19th. Brock Lemley, who won the 410 sprint car title at Skagit, was scored 20th after flipping upside down at the start of the event.

Crockett won the 15-lap B-Main event and a a result got his qualifying time back, putting him in the eighth starting position behind the six dash cars in the A-Main. Engberg, Nutter and Lemley also transferred with him. Danny Kirkpatrick won the 10-lap C-Main over California visitor Stephen Allard and former track champion Jay Cole. Cole also transferred to the B-Main after Idaho's Joe Ramaker scratched. Cole finished fifth in the B-Main and was also the alternate for the A-Main, but did not get the same luck he got earlier.

Stewart's dash victory, featuring the six fastest qualifiers who transferred out of their heat races, came over Stewart, Rice, Rutz, Bergman and Malsam. The top qualifiers all struggled in their heat races, as six of the top eight fastest drivers in qualifying failed to transfer. Bergman, the 12th fastest qualifier, was the final driver to get in the dash.

Victories in heat race competition went to Pinceman, Jonathan Allard, Borden and Trulli. Two non-qualifiers races were also run. Seth Hespe, grandson of the late Brownfield, won the first event and Derek Ingalls, who came into the night seventh in NSCS points, took the checkers in the second race.

Malsam paced the 54-car field, the third largest for the NSCS this season, with a time of 12.339 seconds in qualifying, only a two one-hundredths of a second off Rice's track record time.

The NSCS continues racing Saturday with a $10,092 winners paycheck on the line. After qualifying and heat races, a break in the action will take place as points from Friday and early Saturday will be tallied. Sixteen cars will be locked into the A-Main, with the top six also being locked into the dash. Stewart Wins First Night Of Brownfield Memorial

Taylor Picks Up Win In The Midgets.

By Jack Fordyce

Grays Harbor Raceway, Elma, WA. 9/15/07

Shane Stewart of Bixby, OK. finished up the Friday night of the inaugural Fred Brownfield Memorial Race at Grays Harbor Raceway when he took the checkered flag in the NSCS twenty five-lap feature race at 12:40 Saturday morning.

Stewart ended NSCS points leader Roger Crockett of Medford, OR. perfect record of three straight feature wins at the Elma track this year in the NSCS series, and followed up his World Of Outlaws feature win at Elma just three weeks ago.

Crockett failed to qualify for the feature race as he finished fifth in his heat race and had to get to the feature race by winning the B Main.

The race got off to a rough start as it took two tries to get a lap in as Brock Lemley of Bellingham, WA took a hard right into the wall in turn-four bringing out the red flag. The next start wasn’t much better when Glenn Borden Jr. of Raymond,WA., Robby Vaughn of  Snohomish, WA. and Steve Kilcup of Sedro Wolley, WA. all got tangled up in turn, with Kilcup flipping his car.

Stewart had the pole by virtue of his win in the trophy dash earlier in the race program, but lost the top spot to Mitch Olson of Tacoma, WA. on the first lap.

Olson set a quick pace, followed by Stewart, Travis Rutz of Langley, B. C. Shawn Rice of Tacoma, and Malsam.

Stewart was able to get by Olson for the lead when he made an inside move on the leader in turn-two on lap-twenty when the got into slower traffic.

Stewart didn’t have to worry about Olson when he shredded a tire on lap-twenty three and left the track on the hook.

Stewart cruised to the checkered flag, followed by Rutz, Rice, Seth Bergman edged Crockett for the fourth spot.

Samantha Taylor of Bonny Lake, WA. picked up her first feature win of the season in the Ford Focus Midgets series when she passed pole sitter and former Grays Harbor track champion Brian Thomas of McCleary, WA. on the second lap.

Taylor was having no problem holding on to the top spot as Thomas, Otto Jorgenson of Auburn, WA. Dan West JR. this year’s track champion, and Lee St Paul of Shelton, WA. were all in pursuit, but were unable to gain ground.

Taylor survived a restart when the caution flag came out with just two laps left in the race, but she held her ground on the restart and took the checkered flag, followed by Thomas, West Jr. Jeff Bell of Marysville and St Paul.

Stewart takes NSCS win in first Medford race to kickoff Speedweek Monday July 23rd

Andrew Kunas, NSCS Publicist

Monday July 23, 2007- WHITE CITY, Ore. - Shane Stewart didn't seem to be bothered by the fact he had never raced on Southern Oregon Speedway before. That became more evident when he won Monday's Northwest Speed Week opener in Northwest Sprint Challenge Series competition.

Monday's event saw one of the more bizarre endings in recent memory. Stewart had led all 18 completed laps of the scheduled 30-lapper when a green-white-checkered was called for as the track's weeknight curfew had arrived and gone. Following Stewart the entire race was NSCS point leader and four-time race winner Roger Crockett.

Crockett got underneath Stewart in turns one and two on the restart, but contact was made, sending both drivers spinning around. Crockett stopped in the Henderson Motorsports No. 7N Eagle, but Stewart managed to keep going and retain his top position and with checkers falling he had his first career NSCS victory aboard the Doyle's No. 1 Shaver-powered Maxim.

"I was just lucky to keep it going, honestly. Unfortunately, Mike Doyle's nice new ride has a scratch on it," Stewart, out of Bixby, Okla. joked quietly. Doyle, whom Crockett used to drive for and won Northern Sprint Tour championships with, had put together the ride with mechanical whiz Paul Silva for Stewart to drive this week as a hired gun. Stewart has spent much of this season in that role, recently winning the Ohio Speed Week title with the All-Star Circuit of Champions.

Golden State Challenge series point leader Brent Kaeding of Campbell, Calif. inherited second in his own No. 69 Shaver-powered Maxim at the finish as a result of Crockett's misfortune. The 12-time "King of California" has won the Monday Speed Week race at Southern Oregon four times. Bellingham, Wash.'s Brock Lemley, racing at Southern Oregon for the first time also, finished a strong third aboard the Kentch Bros. No. 40 Triple X. Reigning "King of California" Jonathon Allard of Chico finished fourth in the Morrie Williams No. 0 Kistler-powered Maxim.

Perhaps the biggest winner of the evening was Tacoma's Mitch Olson, who finished fifth in the Mike Olson No. 98m Shark-powered Rocket. Crockett's 85-point lead over Olson going into the evening took a hit as Crockett was credited with a 17th place finish, his only finish outside the top five in the NSCS all season. Olson, a feature winner earlier this season in NSCS competition, ran in the top ten the entire way and also ran ahead of Kaeding for a time.

Stewart, on two instances, was approaching slower traffic when cautions occurred to clear the track for him. The first was on lap 11 when Snohomish, Wash.'s Seth Bergman spun around in turn four after being tapped unintentionally by British Columbia's Travis Rutz. The other came on lap 16 when Billy Nutter, who entered the evening third in points, broke his front end suspension after contact with another car exiting turn four.

One more caution came with 18 laps complete when Rutz and Dan Menne, who won the May 26 NSCS event at Southern Oregon, got together and spun in turn four. That set up the fateful final restart that saw Stewart and Crockett tangle.

"(Crockett) was trying to win. I can't blame him," said Stewart, who became the fifth different driver to win an A-Main in the inaugural NSCS season. "There was loose stuff thrown on the track (from prior incidents), and that was the only reason I kept going. I'm sorry for the fans the race was cut short. I know curfews are strict around here."

Stewart was third fastest in qualifying before finishing third in his heat race and second in the dash to place himself outside Crockett on the front row of the feature. Stewart and Crockett dueled for two laps before Stewart established himself at the front of the field.

Fifth-place points man and top rookie contender Robbie Vaughn of Monroe, Wash. finished sixth from near the back of the 20-car field in the Jeff Jansma No. 4r Becker and recorded his fourth straight top ten A-Main finish since crashing out of the B-Main on May 25 at Willamette Speedway. Vaughn was scheduled to 18th but moved up a row following Steve Vague's scratch from the A-Main field.

In his first appearance with the NSCS California's Jeff Delte finished seventh after starting 14th while rookie Evan Funk of La Conner, Wash. finished eighth. After his earlier spin, Bergman recovered to finish ninth and earn his fifth top ten finish. Garen Linder of Central Point, Ore. rounded out the top ten.

Sultan, Wash.'s Derek Ingalls, who before Monday was the only driver to have successfully transferred out his heat race in all seven previous NSCS events, saw that streak end when he suffered a flat right rear tire and finished ninth in the third heat race. Ingalls, who was seventh in points going in, finished fifth in the B-Main but still transferred after Vague's scratch and drove his way to an 11th place finish.

After their earlier incident, Menne finished 13th and Rutz 14th, respectively. Rutz entered the evening eight points behind Nutter for third, and Nutter ended up finishing 19th after his earlier problems. Tyler Spath, who came into the night 11th in points, dropped out of the feature and was scored 20th.

Allard, a two-time former Dirt Cup champion at Skagit Speedway and the current 410 sprint car point leader at Silver Dollar Speedway in California, had an eventful evening on his way to his fourth-place finish. After setting fast time in qualifying, Allard blew his motor during the first heat race and was forced to put in an older motor for the 15-lap B-Main. Allard would finish second behind Rutz, who was second by Allard in qualifying. By finishing 1-2, both got their times back behind the six dash cars and Allard started seventh and Rutz eighth.

Finishing third and fourth behind Rutz and Allard in the B-Main were Menne and Jayme Barnes, who tagged the back of the A-Main field. Shane Forte' of Junction City, Ore. won the 10-lap C-Main after a last lap pass around Josh DeWitt.

The dash, which featured the six fastest qualifiers who transferred out of their heat races and set the first six starting positions for the A-Main, was won by Crockett over Stewart, Olson, Kaeding, Lemley and Bergman. Nutter, Kaeding, Todd Zeitler and Delte each won 10-lap heat races.

Allard's time in qualifying was 12.193 seconds around the 1/3-mile, semi-banked clay oval. The remaining top ten were Rutz, Stewart, Menne, Bergman, Kaeding, Hawaiian visitor Dean Freitas, Idaho's Randy Pierce, Crockett and Barnes.

Fifty cars, the largest field for a Northwest Sprint Challenge Series event this season, were on hand at Southern Oregon Speedway with drivers from eight U.S. states and two Canadian provinces taking part. Along with Hawaii's Freitas and Oklahoma's Stewart, Alaska's Steve Martin also raced as did a handful of racers from Alberta and Montana. In years past, Southern Oregon served as the opening venue for Northwest Speed Week. That was not supposed to be the case this year, but Southern Oregon got to host the opener again anyway as last weekend's Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge at Grays Harbor Raceway in Washington was postponed by rainfall.

Northwest Speed Week continues Tuesday at Cottage Grove Speedway near Eugene and the Oregon portion of Speed Week concluded Wednesday at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon. Things close on Friday and Saturday with the Bob's Burgers & Brew Skagit 360 Nationals at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash. More information on the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series and its drivers can be seen online at http://www.racenscs.com.
